Air accident

On the same day as this last entry, István Horthy, eldest son of Hungary’s Regent Miklos Horthy, died at the Alexeyevka airbase when his Hejja crashed due to a mechanical failure. A year earlier, Bruno Mussolini, one of the Italian dictator’s sons, had been killed in an aviation accident when the new Piaggio bomber he was testing for the Regia Aeronautica crashed near Pisa.

This was yet more grim news for an increasingly despondent Corporal Balogh:

21 August. We were bombed throughout the night. Oh God how little human life is worth! The Russians, having been pushed back across the Don, are attacking again. We counted the losses in our company: twenty dead, ninety-four wounded, and three missing [author’s note: more than half the company’s total strength] … Morale is very low. All my friends are wounded.

22 August. We have been reinforced with a new draft … These infantrymen should have gone home, but instead they have been transferred to us … We spent the whole day redistributing the weapons of those who have been killed or wounded … If we have to go on our nerves will break.
